About Me

The studio is the center of my life’s work. It’s a generative place, full of possibility and mystery. The act of self-expression taps into a deep sea of emotions, thoughts, experiences and moods that are highly individualistic. There are few boundaries and it can be a kind of freeform play. How and what to create is always a question, so I start out by creating some kind of problem or structure within which to work, such as using a limited palette, or trying to simplify the profusion of images and shapes that emerge. Frequently there are many questions that arise. Painting is a conversation, and I’m never certain where it will lead. Remaining open and going with the flow is key. I enjoy the nature of the creative process, and I have learned that seemingly unproductive time in the studio isn't wasted because it informs what happens later. I never know where some nugget of perceived failure will lead me down a new path!

I’m inspired by connections, travel, music, books, decorative arts, gardens, the sea, colors, shapes and patterns. I’m also intrigued by the visual nuts and bolts of painting: composition, structure and line. I'm always trying to figure out what makes a great painting-one I want to look at again and again. I spend a lot of time viewing art. I look to great artists, old and new to stay inspired and guide me.

My paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows and galleries and cultural centers throughout the United States. I received a B.A. in Visual Arts from Bennington College, and have studied in the MFA program at Colorado State, The Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, New York's The Art Student's League and The National Academy of Design, and attended workshops at Anderson Ranch and The Art Institute of Chicago.
